It’s always fun, albeit a bit challenging, to find a new color scheme for your home. Or maybe you aren’t looking for a whole new color scheme, but you want to try just one new color. With so many colors out there, though, how do you decide which to use?

The experts at the Pantone Color Institute may be able to help. Each year, they choose a Color of the Year, which they find by looking at the entertainment, fashion, sports and other industries. The 2014 color is Pantone 18-3224: Radiant Orchid.

Radiant Orchid is a shade of purple with a mix of fuchsia and pink. It has both warm and cool undertones, and it’s versatile: It goes well with neutrals, such as beige or gray, and even pairs well with other colors, like teal or light yellow.

Want to work the Color of the Year into your home? There are plenty of ways to do so. Radiant Orchid is a perfect color for an accent wall, a piece of furniture that you’d like to serve as a focal point in a room, or simply as the color of several pieces of decor.

Try a decorative wreath for your front door that incorporates pops of Radiant Orchid, or paint that end table in your family room that you’ve been thinking needs an update. A vase of flowers (maybe even orchids) or a patterned rug with Radiant Orchid and other similar shades is a great way to add a little extra something to a room.
