Craft Your Own Homemade Bird Feeder

Posted by:

Making this homemade bird feeder was so much fun. My daughter and I had a blast stringing the berries and filling the molds. It turned out great and it’s so simple to make. It’s a great way to attract birds to your yard, which has numerous benefits for you and your home. Attracting more birds to your yard helps with insects and other pest, weed control, flower pollination and even educational opportunities for you and the kids.

If you’ve ever looked a bird feeder and thought to yourself, I could make that at home, you’re right! This post will hopefully inspire you to tackle it as your next project and give you some ideas and how-to advice for getting it done quickly and easily.

Let’s get started.

Here is what you will need:

  • Box plain gelatin (2 packets)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 1/2 or 2 cups of bird seed
  • Cherries
  • Blueberries
  • Twine
  • Ribbon
  • Wax paper
  • Cookie cutters (we used hearts, butterflies and tulips)

This was a very inexpensive project, and I was able to find everything I needed at my favorite hardware store, Blackhawk Hardware in Charlotte, NC.

In a sauce pan, boil the water and follow the directions on the gelatin, using both packets. Whisk in the birdseed until you get a sticky consistency. Place your cookie cutters on wax paper.

Fill the cutters with the seed mixture.

Cut a straw into 2-in. segments and insert into the center of each cake. (This provides a hole to string the cakes to the twigs.)

Let them set for two hours. We put them in the freezer to speed up the process.

String cherries and blueberries onto the ribbon.

We then gathered some twigs and tied them together with twine into a star-shaped pattern. Don’t forget to add a line for hanging.

Tie the seed cakes to the end of the ribbon and the ribbon to the twigs. Your homemade birdfeeder is ready to hang. Your feathered friends will love it and you!

We thought this would be a great Fourth of July project using red, white, and blue ribbon with star-shaped seed cakes. It’s patriotic and eco-friendly.

  1. The film, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, is one of the best interpretations of Romeo and Juliet ever. Shakespeare’s original play formed the basis of this classic https://www.theupcoming.co.uk/2022/01/28/best-romeo-and-juliet-movie-adaptations-of-all-time/ performance. Which encapsulates the core of the tragic love story. Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting are the perfect Romeo and Juliet. Because their chemistry and youthful exuberance brought the characters to life.
