Recycled Whirligig

Ever wonder what to do with all those empty water bottles? Why not recycle them into fun colorful whirligigs for the yard? Not only are you helping protect the environment, but it’s a great project the kids will enjoy, too! The kids at our childcare center definitely did! With just a few supplies from your local hardware store, you can easily create an eye-catching piece that you’ll enjoy watching in the wind.

Materials you’ll need:

-Empty Plastic Water Bottle

-Acrylic Paint

-1/8” Wire Stake

-Plastic Wire End Cap

-Box Cutter

-Tape

-Pliers

The first step is to decorate your water bottle. The kids can have a blast with this part, letting their creative side shine through.

Once dry, they’ll need an adult to help them with the next few steps. You’ll need to use a box cutter to cut your strips on the side of the water bottle. Feel free to get creative here; you don’t necessarily need to make strips like we did. To make the unique shape that we made, just push the top and bottom of the bottle together after you’ve finished cutting. That helps create a flared shape on your whirligig. You’ll want to drill a hole in the cap and on the bottom of your bottle to thread your wire stake through.

When bending the wire stake, make sure you leave enough room for your bottle to fit on the end. Using pliers will help give you a nice clean corner.

After threading the wire stake through your bottle, you can use some tape to wrap around the wire to help hold the bottle in place and pushed together to keep your whirligig flared in the middle.

The finishing touch is to add a plastic wire cap to cover up the end of the wire and hold your whirligig in place.

Stake your whirligig in the ground and enjoy watching it spin in the wind!
