Selecting a Backsplash For Your Kitchen

Posted by:

A kitchen backsplash helps make it easier to clean up any spatters that splash onto your walls while cooking. It also can add a decorative finishing touch to your kitchen decor.

But there are a variety of colors and materials to choose from, so it can be tough to decide what materials you want to use, and what you want your backsplash to look like.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you select a backsplash for your kitchen:

  • Think about the statement you want to make when deciding on a material. Backsplashes can be made from granite, quartz, marble, glass tile, ceramic tile, beadboard, subway tile and more. Colored glass tiles add a fun vibe to your kitchen, while marble is more sleek and modern.

  • If your kitchen has other neutral colors (such as wood or white cabinets with a countertop that’s a solid black or a mix of black, brown, beige, tan, gray or white), the backsplash is a great place to add some color and really make a statement.
  • Want to add a twist to your backsplash design? Try using a contrasting grout color, such as white subway tile with dark gray grout. It will make the tiles pop and make your backsplash really stand out.

  • Try adding a design to your backsplash—perhaps a stripe of tile in a contrasting color across the whole backsplash, or a box in a different color above the stove.
  • Because the backsplash generally goes from the bottom of the cabinets to the tops of the counters, make sure the color you choose coordinates with both of these surfaces (as well as other elements in the room). If your countertop has a busier pattern with several colors, try a neutral stone or a solid-colored tile for the backsplash, rather than adding in more designs and colors, which will make the whole kitchen look busy.
  • Some types of tile will require more maintenance than others. For example, stone and granite will require regular resealing. Before you select your backsplash material, find out what kind of maintenance is involved and make sure it won’t take more time than you’re willing to devote to it.

  • Tiles come in a wide variety of prices, so figure out your total budget and square footage before going to your local store to shop for tile. A little math ahead of time will give you an idea of how much you can afford per square foot, so you don’t fall in love with—or buy—a tile that will put you over your budget. (Don’t forget to factor in the costs of other materials you’ll need for this project, including thinset, grout and trowels).

Of course, another good resource is an employee at your local home improvement store. Talk to someone there who can tell you about different materials, colors, designs and prices, and help you decide what may be best for your kitchen.
