Container Gardening: Grow Your Own Pizza Garden

Posted by:

Container gardening can be a great option for people that would love fresh vegetables, but may not have the space or option to plant a garden in their own yard.

I decided to combine my love of fresh vegetables, gardening and making homemade pizza. You can grow all the fresh ingredients you’d need to top your own homemade pizza this summer.

Let’s get started.

You will need the following items:

  • containers
  • a trowel
  • garden soil mix
  • vegetables and herbs of your choice

I used tomatoes, peppers, basil, thyme and oregano for my toppings and I was able to get everything I needed from my favorite local hardware store, Blackhawk Hardware in Charlotte, NC. The knowledge of their staff combined with their garden center are out of this world.

Plant all the live plants in the containers using the garden soil mix. Make sure they have ample sunlight and drainage. I sometimes use rocks, found in the yard, in the bottom of my containers to aid with drainage. Follow any pre-printed planting instructions.

Water well and regularly. Keep an eye on the plants, as you will need to stake them soon.

I am excited to know that in about two months, I will have fresh pizza ingredients.

I found a great little four-basket shelf in my bathroom that I moved outside and put my containers in. I decided to add a little ivy and a few annuals to fill it out. It worked out perfectly!
