Turning Your Garden Into an Outdoor Living Area This Spring

As the days get longer it’s time to plan for spring, and there’s no better place to start than with your garden. This year, why not transform your garden space into an outdoor living room? Here are a few ideas for how to get started, using simple materials and tools you can find at any hardware store or home center.

Recycle Garden Furniture

A living room needs furniture. You can save big bucks and create distinctive furnishings for your garden living room by refurbishing old furniture. Start with your own furniture or find cast-offs at yard sales and thrift stores.  Because this furniture needs to stand up to the elements, reupholster chairs with weatherproof fabric, use rust-resistant hardware and coat all pieces with waterproof finishes.

Build an Outdoor Fireplace

Fire Pit

An outdoor fireplace serves both practical and aesthetic purposes: it’s perfect for making an outdoor meal of hot dogs and marshmallows, and it creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.

You can build an outdoor fireplace that uses wood or gas. If you don’t have advanced masonry and carpentry skills, you can buy and install a pre-fabricated fireplace. Prefab fireplaces come in many different designs; just make sure your is made for use outdoors. Pre-fabricated kits come with all the parts you need; you just need common tools you can get at a hardware store.

Make a Planter Box

Planter Box

If your garden soil isn’t fit for growing plants, you have two choices: dig up the soil and add organic material, or use planter boxes. More and more gardeners are choosing planter boxes because they allow you to grow a lot of plants in a small space and because they are easy to work with.

You can buy wood and build a planter box to fit your space or you can make your container from secondhand wood—wood that has already been used for another purpose. Here’s a simple way to turn an old wooden bookcase into a plant container:

  1. Remove the shelves.
  2. If the bookcase has a back, you can remove it or leave it, depending on whether or not you want a bottom for your box.
  3. Nail a small piece of 2 x 4 into each corner to keep the corners square.
  4. Put the box where you want it and fill it with good potting soil.

Install a Fence

Fences define outdoor living spaces, create privacy, and protect children and pets. You can save a lot of money by putting up your fence by yourself; it just takes a bit of muscle power and careful measuring to install a garden fence.

Whether you choose wire or wood, you will need a posthole digger to make the holes. First set the corner posts, using concrete, small pebbles, or loose rock to make sure the posts stay firmly in the ground. Measure your gate opening, then mark where the rest of the posts should go. Eight-to-ten-foot spacing is common. You will need a string level to make sure all the posts are set at the same height. After that’s finished, you can attach the wire or wood fencing to the posts.
