Homemade Cat Toy: Grow Your Own Catnip

Gardening is the most popular activity in the United States. Get your kids into the fun early with the purr-fect crop—catnip for your cat! Most cats go crazy for the stuff and, after a trip to your local garden center, you and your kids can grow your own.

You will Need:

  • Catnip seeds
  • Fine sandpaper
  • One 2-inch flowerpot or seed-starter pots
  • Potting soil mix
  • Plastic wrap

Let’s Get Started

1. Lightly rub a few seeds with sandpaper.

5. After 24 hours, cover the pot with plastic wrap with a few small holes in the top. Lightly water only if the topsoil seems dry.

6. When plants begin to sprout, remove the plastic and place the pot in a sunny window. Keep the soil moist.

7. Once the catnip begins to grow, you can plant it in your garden or patio pots. Catnip is said to repel mosquitoes, so you may want to plant it around your outdoor eating area!

8. Cut the catnip when it reaches 8 to 10 inches tall.

9. Hang catnip to dry in an airy location or lay it over a piece of screen. Store dried leaves in an airtight container out of bright light.

If you’re a cat lover, you know how much they enjoy playing with toys, and one of their favorites is catnip. Growing catnip in your own garden is not only a fun hobby, but it also provides your furry friend with a healthy and natural source of entertainment. You can even use the catnip to make your own cat toys, such as stuffed mice or pouches.
