This year, stay in bed on Black Friday to avoid the long lines and crazy shoppers. Instead, “shop small” at your favorite local hardware store on Small Business Saturday. Saturday, Nov. 30 is the fourth annual Small Business Saturday, sponsored by American Express and supported by Independent We Stand.
Since 2010, Small Business Saturday has been celebrated the Saturday after Thanksgiving to raise awareness about the benefits of supporting small businesses and drive consumer spending toward such businesses. Last year, consumers spent an estimated $5.5 billion at locally owned, independent businesses on Small Business Saturday, and the trend is expected to continue growing this year.
Thanks to the celebration created by American Express, small businesses experience their own kind of “Black Friday rush” at the official start of the holiday shopping season each year. Small Business Saturday spending helps both local businesses and local economies, as it ignites the process of returning money to the local economy through small businesses. Additionally, Small Business Saturday gets Americans thinking about small businesses and encourages them to seek out and experience the difference that these businesses make to their customers and community.
In continued support of Small Business Saturday, American Express offers small businesses a variety of tools to prepare for and make the most of the celebration. Business owners can download free Small Business Saturday marketing materials to advertise the event and generate customer interest in shopping small. Businesses that accept American Express can also list themselves on the Shop Small Map so that local shoppers can find them on the day of the event and all year long. Small business owners should log in here by Nov. 4 to make sure their business location is on the map and listed correctly.
American Express is providing a $10 credit to card members who register their card and use it to shop at a participating independently owned business on Small Business Saturday. Consumers can register their American Express card for the $10 credit starting on November 24 by visiting the Shop Small website.
