Creating a Neutral Master Bedroom

With every trip to the furniture store, I find that my wife and I have very different decorative taste. I tend to gravitate to the symmetrical, clean line, modern furniture and artwork while my wife is across the store looking at mismatching, bulky, ornate, vintage pieces or basically anything that is not what I’m looking at.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the key to a happy marriage is learning to appreciate a more traditional decorating style (aka: “yes dear, whatever you like, I like”). And, now that our kids are grown and out on their own, we decided to invest a little time and money into our master bedroom.

Neutral Master Bedroom-wall color

We spent some time at our local hardware store picking out the perfect shade of paint. After peeling four layers of wallpaper from the walls, we primed the walls for painting and then used a really creamy chocolate color on the walls with a light off-white trim.

Neutral Master Bedroom-window treatement

My wife bought some shower curtains and made some really nice roman shades. Then she surrounded the window with several layers of drapes and a valence. Window treatments are an easy way to make a dramatic change to a room.

Neutral Master Bedroom-Crown Molding

I added some crown molding around the top edge of the room and painted the ceiling the same color as the trim.

We didn’t really want to invest in new bedroom furniture, but ours (being more than 25 years old) needed a face lift. So we sanded the furniture, and gave it a black, vintage paint job and added glass handles. What a difference that made. It looks like a completely different set now, like something straight out of a Pottery Barn store.

To complete the room, we added some cream rugs, a couple old chairs that have been passed down in the family and a big chest at the foot of our bed.

So in just a couple weekends, we were able to update our master bedroom on a budget with a neutral color palette, reused furniture and some cost-friendly window treatments, molding and door handles.

Here are some helpful how-to videos and blogs that I used to complete this project:
